When Jeff Brown opens a new store, he builds it for the community. Brown’s newest store, The Fresh Grocer of Monument Road, opened March 2 to the delight of shoppers who came out to celebrate the newest supermarket in the Philadelphia area.
“Customers were looking for an upscale store,” says Brown, president and CEO. “They wanted a more expanded variety of natural and organic foods, gluten free, kosher products, and high quality prepared foods.”
The 55,000 square foot supermarket at 4160 Monument Road, Philadelphia, took two years to develop. The former Pathmark location underwent extensive remodeling to provide the sophisticated look of The Fresh Grocer. Designed to resemble an outdoor market, the store features an extensive prepared foods selection. Brown’s Chef’s Market foods are all homemade in the store. Items such as butterflied, fire grilled chicken, sticky ribs, Southern fried chicken, fish, Chinese, Sushi and a Soup and Salad Bar line the store’s perimeter. A hoagie bar features a one-foot, one-pound hoagie.
Brown’s bakery selection includes home made local favorites, including sweet potato pie and bean pie. In addition, the store also carries an extensive kosher food selection, verified by a Rabbi, and Halal foods.
The Fresh Grocer features a wide variety of natural and organic items at affordable prices. These items help promote a healthy lifestyle to shoppers. Brown plans to bring in nutritionists who will offer special events to promote healthy food choices and a healthy lifestyle.
A beer and wine garden offers 700 varieties of beer and 700 varieties of wine, which can be purchased to take home or enjoy in the store’s indoor and outdoor cafés.
“This store is designed to be an experience,” Brown says.
Traditional, natural and organic items are available in the vast produce department. Packaged fruits, vegetables and bagged salads are refrigerated in cases with doors to improve product freshness and help the environment. Brown and his team worked to design the store to use less fossil fuels and water.
“We try to reduce our carbon footprint by installing LED lighting, energy efficient coolers and waterless toilets,” he says. “We hold ourselves to high expectations.”
To assist shoppers and combat lost sales due to a 1.5 cent per ounce beverage tax in the city, Brown developed a Tax Free beverage aisle, where shoppers can easily find beverages that are not subject to the tax. Taxed items such as soda are still available, but this helps shoppers, who don’t want to buy highly taxed beverages.
The Fresh Grocer employs more than 200 associates in the new Monument Road supermarket. This is Brown’s second The Fresh Grocer location, in addition to the 11 ShopRite supermarkets he operates in the Philadelphia area.
