Clark Convenience Store Products, a design, consulting and equipment company, recently moved into a renovated 20,000 square foot office/warehouse space to better serve its customers. Located at 2551 Horseshoe Road in Lancaster, the building also houses Clark Service Group and is double the size of its former location in Smoketown, Pennsylvania.
“Our former location was out of date and out of room,” says Glenn Clark, president, Clark Service Group. “The traffic was horrendous on Route 340. This location is much better for our service team.”
The new facility was formerly a distribution warehouse for another part of Clark Associates, its parent company. In January, they began construction — adding walls and flooring for offices, a lunch room and an upgraded phone system. Moving to the new location increased the warehouse space and gave the company the ability to “stage” displays, shelving, millwork and equipment so that it can easily go on the trucks for delivery to stores. In addition, the warehouse contains a two-story parts department with an expanded parts inventory and an organized parts space for the service technicians.
The office area features expansive spaces for meetings, store design consultations and service call monitoring.
Clark started providing store design, equipment and products more than 30 years ago and specialized in convenience stores 15 years ago. Today, the company offers one-stop shopping for stores, from concept and design to construction, equipment and service. It has a service locations in Sarasota, Florida and in Baltimore.
“Our goal is to service the east coast from Florida to Pennsylvania,” said Tilghman Grandstaff, director of operations.
Clark employs 80 associates at its Lancaster facility, including 30 service technicians, six planned maintenance technicians and 14 installers.
Clark Convenience Store Products customers include companies such as Landhope Farms, Pump ‘n Pantry, Rutter’s and Sheetz. It serves retailers looking for ground-up construction and remodeling. Store consultation and design, displays and shelving, counters and millwork, beverage systems, food service equipment, refrigeration and menu development are part of its extensive service offering. In addition, Clark Service Group offers 24-hours/seven days a week equipment service and repair. It has a large replacement parts inventory to get equipment up and running quickly. HVAC service is available through Clark Mechanical Services, while supplies and smallwares are available through the company’s online store at WEBstaurantStore.com.
With its vast knowledge of the convenience store business, menu development is another area where Clark Convenience Store Products can assist retailers.
“We’re able to bring new ideas for foodservice by working back from the menu to suggest equipment options,” Clark said. “With good baseline equipment it’s easy to add more items to the menu. We offer a self-contained fryer and when you start frying food, it really adds to the variety of your menu and opens up new horizons to what you can do. It only takes a few key pieces of equipment.”
Clark Convenience Store Products equipment products feature refrigeration systems, exhausts, steamers, warmers, fryers, high efficiency lighting and other products designed for a smaller footprint, such as dishwashers that don’t require vent hoods.
Clark says the industry recognizes the importance of hiring experienced people with a foodservice background to further develop their menus and operate their kitchens. Retailers have evolved from the traditional hot dog rollers and sandwiches to offering meal replacement options. Their foodservice experts know how to put out the same quality products, during the same time frame from store to store with two to three shifts of people.
Beverages have become a featured product in convenience stores. Gourmet coffee offerings and soft drink dispensers with sophisticated screens can take up a lot of real estate.
“It can be challenging to develop these programs,” notes Clark. “How can you get that same product into a small footprint? We stay on top of the new equipment coming on the market to help our customers make informed decisions.”
With Clark’s expertise, retailers have developed first-class meal options and destination stores that keep customers coming back.
“We have really focused on the convenience store market,” Clark says. “Specialization has been the key to our success.”
