Giant Food Stores announced this month it will follow other major retailers and raise its minimum wage from $7.25 to $9 per hour starting June 7.
Target, Wal-Mart and Whole Foods were among the retailers who recently announced they are raising their starting wage to $9 an hour.
The change affects Giant’s 197 non-union stores. Approximately 10,000 of the company’s part-time associates will be impacted by this wage increase. Giant Food reports it employs 33,000 associates, approximately two-thirds of whom are currently paid more than $9 an hour.
“We believe that this is the right thing to do,” said Tom Lenkevich, president of Giant Food Stores. “Our goal is to continue to be an employer of choice by offering a competitive total compensation package, a work environment based upon respect, an emphasis on personal excellence and opportunities for career advancement.”
