Keep America Beautiful (KAB), a national community improvement nonprofit, recently honored Giant Food Stores/Martin’s Food Markets with its 2016 National Community Improvement Award for Waste Reduction and Recycling. Giant participated in KAB’s Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania with its Bags to Benches program.
“We are committed to being a responsible retailer by lessening the environmental impact of our operations and helping our customers reduce waste,” said Tom Lenkevich, Giant Food Stores president. “Through our Bags to Benches program, customers can recycle plastic bags at any Giant/Martin’s store rather than filling up the landfills.”
During the nearly 20 years of the program, 15 million plastic bags have been recycled into park benches for use throughout its local communities. It takes approximately 10,000 plastic bags to make one park bench. Giant has donated more than 1,500 benches to local fire departments, churches, schools, townships, parks and playgrounds.
Keep America Beautiful’s National Awards program recognizes the best of the best among the Keep America Beautiful network of more than 620 state and community-based affiliates, leading corporate partners and individual volunteers across the country who have committed to delivering cleaner, greener and more beautiful communities.
