Landis Markets wasn't actively looking for another store when they found the vacant Sanatoga supermarket in Pottstown, Pennsylvania earlier this year, but after careful research, adding their fifth location made good sense.
"The store only required modest improvements," said Scott Landis, vice president, who is among the 3rd generation actively involved in the operation of the company. "It was a quick turnaround and we are very pleased with the store."
The Landis family gathered on February 29 at the 36,000 square foot supermarket, located at 2190 East High Street in the Sanatoga shopping center, for an open house and grand opening celebration.
The opening of a new community supermarket was important to area residents, since the former store closed last August.
"People really missed the store," Landis relays. "It's the same store, but we've added many new products and services."
While Landis brought in a leadership team, they were able to hire a lot of employees who had worked at the former Sanatoga store.
"We have about 55 employees and eventually we hope to grow to 75 to 80 employees," Landis said. "Shoppers will see a lot of familiar faces."
The supermarket features a marketplace concept within the store. New canopies and signage differentiate key departments, including the bakery, deli, produce, meat and seafood departments. Lighting, POS and phone system upgrades modernized the store. SUPERVALU worked with Landis Markets on the new décor package, which now features historical photos from the lower Pottstown area.
Landis Sanatoga offers meal solutions, a soup and salad bar, rotisserie chicken and a large produce department, which showcases Lancaster county produce. The meat department features certified Angus Beef. They also added the Corner Café, which offers 25-30 seats for shoppers to sit and enjoy their purchases.
Pottstown residents will also find the company's scratch bakery Mrs. Benner's in the store. It offers the company's signature Funny Cake, shoo-fly pie, hard tack, and a variety of breads, cookies, desserts and cakes, including custom decorated options.
President Don Nice, a supermarket veteran of more than 45 years, says offering locally-produced, specialty items has allowed the company to have a niche in the marketplace. Landis is the only supermarket to carry Nelson's Ice Cream, which is produced in Royersford, Pennsylvania. Emil's Oyster Pie from Perkasie, Pennsylvania, is another locally produced product that their customers seek out.
"We find areas where big stores can't do as well," Nice said. "We keep looking for those areas, educate ourselves on them and determine if they are right for the company."
Landis Markets also looks for trends in food and works to provide those products to its customers. Sushi is one of those offerings. Shinji Sushi approached them about offering the products and is very successful in their stores.
"He's very passionate about the product," Nice shared.
Scott Landis said they hope to add fuel pumps in the future, so that shoppers can utilize the Landis Go fuel rewards program, and a post office, which was available in the previous store.
Family owned Landis Markets, based in Telford, Pennsylvania, is celebrating its 78th year in business. In addition to the new location at Sanatoga, the company operates supermarkets in Telford, Perkasie, Schwenksville and Vernfield.
