
In its March meeting, the PFMA Loss Prevention Committee heard presentations on and discussed different types of card fraud. Among the presenters:
• Giant Eagle Director of Loss Prevention and Security Reid Fleming presented on a recent gift card counterfeiting scheme through which local residents placed automated calls inquiring into gift card balances and replicating bar codes for cards that had significant balances on them.
• Derry County Detective Matthew Dotts presented on credit card and prepaid card fraud, including a significant card embossing scheme that was discovered and broken up by a tourist stay in Hershey.
• Samantha Shoop of the Pennsylvania State Police led a discussion on the different types of card skimmers placed on ATMs and gas pumps, and how stores and customers can detect them.
• John Paul Livingston and Paul Spiegel of Mid Penn Bank presented on Personal Identifiable Information (PII) theft, the different methods of stealing PII and how businesses and individuals can safeguard their data.
