The Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association (PFMA) held a regional meeting in Philadelphia on February 10 to help retailers learn more about the store food safety inspection process. The Philadelphia Department of Public Health's (DOH) Office of Food Protection hosted the meeting at its University Avenue office in Philadelphia.

Brian Shon, sanitarian supervisor for the Plan Review Unit, began the presentation by describing the steps necessary for a new store to be inspected and approved by DPH.

Bernie Finkel, chief, Office of Food Protection, then discussed the most common reasons for store closure, the primary ones being the absence of a certified food safety manager and repeated code violations that threaten public safety. Finkel also presented on the most common violations found, the most common of which being equipment malfunctions.

The attendees addressed specific requests that they had received from inspectors and shared them with the group.

José Ramos, sanitarian supervisor for Health Districts 7 and 10, attended to offer the presentation in Spanish.

PFMA thanks the representatives from DPH, including Brian Shon, Bernie Finkel and José Ramos for presenting, and the attendees for their participation.
