At presstime, the U.S. Senate voted 63-30 in favor of the Roberts-Stabenow (genetically modified organisms) GMO Labeling bill, S. 764.
The labeling bill from Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) and ranking member Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) mandates GMO labeling nationwide but gives food companies three options for complying: on-package language, a USDA-created symbol or an electronic code.
Vermont’s mandatory labeling bill requiring on-package labels goes into effect July 1, but won’t be enforced until 2017.
The bill goes back to the House for consideration, the last hurdle before the bill can be sent to the President for his signature.
