Alana Sanchez plans to study Physics and Astronomy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her father, Edward Sanchez, works for Wawa in Orlando, Florida, sponsor of her Ridge Scholarship.
Sanchez, a graduate of Winter Springs High School, actively participated in the Certamen, a Latin quiz bowl; Agon, a Greek quiz bowl; and the Brainbowl, a general quiz bowl; Physics Club and the Model UN. Additionally, she was inducted into the National Honor Society, Latin Honor Society and the Math Honor Society. Her awards include National Hispanic Recognition Program finalist, National Merit Commended Student, National Latin Exam Silver Winner and 2nd place in the Regional Brainbowl.
In her essay, Sanchez wrote that her parents have helped her succeed.
“Without my parents supporting me in all of my academic endeavors, I never would have been accepted into my dream school, MIT. It’s their unfailing backbone that allows me to take risks and pursue the topics I’m truly excited about, rather than what is convenient or economically sound.”
