“It is an honor for me to be awarded the 2016 Thomas R. and Laura Ridge Scholarship. I am so grateful for the support that I have received from the Ridge Scholarship throughout my undergraduate and medical school studies. This scholarship has been an important part of my education each year, and I would like to thank PFMA and Wawa, Inc. for the support they have given me during my long journey to realize my dream of becoming a doctor.”
Brooks Culotta, an eight-time Ridge Scholar, is working toward his medical degree at the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC.
In his personal essay, Culotta wrote that reading about Lance Armstrong’s cancer battle inspired him to become an oncologist.
“As I read the book, I realized that what his doctors did was amazing,” he wrote. “I suppose I have my middle school Reading class and teacher to thank for keeping me single-mindedly focused on my final goal of becoming an oncologist.”
During college, Culotta worked in a chemistry research lab and had his research published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and in the chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Volume 50. He was also active in Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society, and the Pre-Med Society. He graduated Cum Laude from Georgetown University in May 2013.
His father Jared Culotta works for Wawa, Inc., sponsor of his scholarship.
