Derek Arnold, Altoona, PA
University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA
Sponsored by Sheetz, Inc.
“I am incredibly humbled to have been selected as a recipient. The education I have received over the past 3 years has given me a skill set that I hope to use to make a positive difference in the world, and the Thomas R. & Laura Ridge Scholarship has made that education possible.”
Derek Arnold, a four-time Ridge Scholarship recipient, attends the University of Pittsburgh where he is pursuing a degree in Accounting and Business Information Systems. His mother, Lori Arnold, works for Sheetz in Hollidaysburg, sponsor of his scholarship.
At school, Arnold is active in the Student Government Board; serves as vice president of Beta Theta Pi, a member of Phi Beta Lamba, the business honor society; and an advisor for Mr. Pitt Business. He volunteers at the Pitt Food Pantry, United Way Miami, Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh, Boys and Girls Clubs of Pittsburgh, and Relay for Life.
In his essay, Arnold explains that he had always thought he would become a doctor, but when a high school teacher asked him why he wanted to become a doctor, he didn’t have an answer.
“Though the medical profession is a noble one, I never stopped to think about how long I would be in school or if it was a good fit for me,” he wrote.
Arnold found his passion in business.
