Emma Torija will begin her studies at the University of Pennsylvania next month, where she plans to study biology. She works part-time for Weis Markets in Shippensburg, Pa.
Torija graduated from Shippensburg Area High School where she was very active as president of the student council, a member of the Key Club, Bird Watching Club and the Interact Club. She participated in the Science Olympiad and induction into the National Honor Society, Mu Alphia Theta, a Math Honor Society; AP Scholar with Honor, National Hispanic Scholar, Carlisle Sentinel Teen of the Week, Lions Club Student of the Month and Red Cross High School Student Leader.
She volunteered her time with the Messiah United Methodist Church Youth Group, Youthworks Mission Trip, Reach Misson Trip and the American Red Cross.
In her essay, Torija wrote that her experience shadowing in the Emergency Department at a local hospital helped determine her career choice.
“This positive experience allowed me to explore opportunities and decide that I want to become an Emergency Physician,” she wrote.
