The House rejected a bill that would have prevented municipalities from enacting plastic bag fees.
HB 1280, introduced by Representative Michael K. Hanna (D-Centre and Clinton), was defeated 75-112 after lawmakers raised concerns over the bill’s impact on retailers such as Aldi, Save-A-Lot and PriceRite, who already charge for plastic bags.
Other lawmakers spoke in support of the fees to protect the environment by reducing the consumption of plastic bags. In addition, they felt consumers might be more likely to remember their reusable bags when fees are charged.
