Legislator Spotlight: State Rep. Danilo Burgos, D-Philadelphia

What are your top three legislative priorities for 2020?
  • Secure funding to remove lead and asbestos from our public schools.
  • Change our educational curriculum in public education to one that teaches mandatory civic engagement and financial literacy.
  • Criminal justice reform.

What are the important issues facing your district?
  • My community has three (possibly more) elementary schools with unsafe levels of asbestos and lead.
  • Too many criminal conviction with unfair sentences.
  • Lack of civic engagement and financial literacy education.

Where do you shop locally for food?
  • Brown’s (Super Stores) ShopRite.

What are the biggest challenges for grocers in Philadelphia?
  • Philadelphia taxes. Local grocery stores pay more taxes than any other jurisdiction.

What are your takeaways from Gov. Wolf’s budget address?
  • No new taxes, increased investment in public school maintenance

What is your favorite food, or meal, to cook?
  • Philadelphia Bodega cheesesteak.

Rep. Danilo Burgos was elected to serve his first term in the House of Representatives in November 2018, representing neighborhoods in north Philadelphia including Kensington, Hunting Park, Glenwood and Feltonville. He is the first Dominican elected to serve in the Pennsylvania General Assembly.

The legislator spotlight is printed in the PFMA's Spectrum magazine, which is published six times a year. To be featured in the legislator spotlight in an upcoming Spectrum, contact Director of Communications Matthew Kemeny at mkemeny@pfma.net.
