The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced June 19 that it is phasing- in new security features for Pennsylvania driver’s licenses and photo identification cards. The updates will be phased-in over the next four years and replace the current products.
The security updates are part of PennDOT’s efforts to protect customers against counterfeiting, fraud and identity theft. Some of the enhancements include the elimination of the magnetic strip, one and two-dimensional barcodes and laser perforation. The updates do not cover the REAL ID Act. PennDOT expects REAL ID-compliant driver licenses and ID cards will be available in 2019.
Other important facts to know:
• The roll out begins June 19 with a pilot program at the Harrisburg Customer Service Center. Roll-out at all 71 Driver License Center and 97 Photo License Centers will be completed by October 2017.
• Both the current and new designs will be in circulation during the transition period. Current cards will be phased out during the normal renewal process.
• Non-expired cards using the current design will be valid during the transition period.
• The new cards are not REAL ID-compliant. System, building infrastructure and process changes are necessary for Pennsylvania to issue REAL ID-compliant products. PennDOT anticipates they will be available in 2019.
