"I would like to thank PFMA for awarding me the Thomas R. and Laura Ridge Scholarship again this year. This scholarship has been a very important part of funding my undergraduate and now my medical education, and it is a privilege for me to receive this award again this year. I would also like to thank Wawa, Inc. for its support as I continue to pursue my education."
Brooks Culotta is a seven time Ridge Scholar pursuing his medical degree at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. His father, Jared Culotta, works for Wawa, Inc., sponsor of his scholarship.
In his essay, Culotta says reading about Lance Armstrong's treatment and recovery from cancer inspired him to become an oncology physician when he was in the eighth grade.
He started working toward his career goal as a research assistant in the Georgetown University Chemistry Department following his freshman year. His research was published in the chemistry journal "Angewandte Chemie International Edition." He has also been involved in the Phi Alpha Theta, a national history honor society and the pre-med society while in school.
He served the community as a volunteer for a student organized health clinic (HOYA Clinic) and at Mercy Health Clinic in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
