"It is a great honor to have been selected for this award for the fifth time. This scholarship has and will continue to make my pursuit of helping others in medicine through the use of inexpensive technology a reality, and I am truly grateful. Thank you."
Five-time Ridge Scholar Vignesh Selvakumaran attends Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina.
After completing his degree in bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania last year, Selvakumaran spent a year as a Sobti Family Fellow at the Aravind Eye Care System, a World Health Organization Hospital, in India. There, he worked with engineers to create an affordable device used for cataract surgery.
"This will allow doctors to access rural patients and provide free eye care, not only in India, but in places like Africa and Indonesia," he wrote in his essay.
During college, he was a volunteer at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr Hospital surgery department, and Weiss Tech House, a high school outreach program.
His mother, Sujatha Selvakumaran, works for Wawa, Inc., sponsor of his Ridge Scholarship.
