Legislator Spotlight: Senator Maria Collett

What are your top three legislative priorities in 2026?

I’m focused on building a healthier, more affordable Pennsylvania for all of us by reducing healthcare costs, combatting the housing crisis, and protecting consumers from corporate greed.

What are the important issues
facing your district?

Every day I hear from constituents who are struggling in the face of rising utility costs, unaffordable housing, and low wages. These issues are particularly challenging for older adults in our community living on a fixed income. While my staff and I do everything we can to connect folks to available resources, there’s more we could be doing on the legislative level to make life more affordable. Whether that’s raising our minimum wage, establishing paid family and medical leave, increasing housing availability, or any number of good proposals, I’m ready to act.

What is your favorite vacation destination?

Greece! I was born in Athens and still have extended family in Crete that I love to visit whenever I can.

How can state government better support local retailers in overcoming today’s challenges and thrive?

Local retailers’ success is key to the success of our communities and our Commonwealth’s economy. On the state level, we should be improving access to business loans, grant assistance, and employee training supports. I’m a strong advocate for grant programs like Main Street Matters and for increased investments in job training and career readiness programs – from Career and Technical Education programs to specialized apprenticeships.

What are your biggest challenges and successes as a legislator?

Legislative action takes time – especially in a divided legislature. It can be challenging to know there are good policies that can positively impact the people in our communities that just aren’t getting called up for a vote for reasons that often have little to do with the merits of the legislation. Navigating that challenge and finding common ground to effectuate change has given me some great wins for the people of our Commonwealth in the years I have served.

What is your favorite food or meal to cook?

Any food I’m cooking for my family! As someone who grew up with the traditions and flavors of Greek cooking, I’m happiest mixing up homemade tzatziki, baking fresh tiropitakia and sipping a post-dinner glass of tsipouro.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love to spend time with my family and our two dogs, Foster and Otis. I’m an avid reader of mystery and romance novels and love a good binge-watch at the end of a long session day. My current favorite show is the Norwegian crime drama, Detective Hole.

What is your greatest success as a legislator over the past few years?

One of my proudest achievements is championing a $55 million Student Loan Relief for Nurses Program, which delivered up to $7,500 in loan relief for thousands of nurses who worked through the COVID-19 pandemic. Supporting Pennsylvania’s hardworking healthcare professionals and strengthening our nursing workforce pipeline remain top priorities for me, because I know if nursing care suffers, patients suffer. ■
