Locally-Sourced Sustainable Gasoline:How to Run Your Car on Wood

Woodland BIO is turning forest waste into road-spec gasoline, offering retailers a way to keep fuel dollars in the Commonwealth.

The nozzle clicks into place with a familiar metallic thud. To the driver filling their SUV, the liquid flowing into the tank looks, acts, and even smells like the gasoline they’ve used for decades.

But this fuel didn’t begin in a Gulf oil well or a Texas refinery. It started as “dirty wood chips” -the bark, branches, and tops of Pennsylvania hardwoods.

For the Pennsylvania fuel retailer, this isn’t a laboratory fantasy. It is the core mission of Woodland Biomass Innovations (Woodland BIO). By converting low-grade woody biomass into drop-in, 87-octane gasoline, the company is preparing to hand retailers a powerful new tool: a way to offer a sustainable, locally-produced product without spending a single cent on new infrastructure.

Stopping the Economic Leak

Every time a Pennsylvanian spends $50 at the pump, 40 of those dollars leave the local township, exit the Commonwealth, and often flow to foreign extractors and refiners.

Woodland BIO proposes a circular alternative. The 42,000 gallons/day facility planned for Tioga County is designed to anchor those dollars in Pennsylvania soil.

“Our vision is to create local circular supply chains,” says Luca Pandolfi, Founder and CEO of Woodland BIO. The facility is expected to create 50 to 100 direct, well-paying jobs on-site, with dozens more created indirectly. These are families who live in the community and shop at local grocery stores. When a retailer carries Woodland BIO gasoline, they aren’t just selling a commodity; they are fueling the very customers who walk through their front doors.

Breaking the “Two-Factor Trap”

For decades, customers choose where to buy gas based on two variables: Location and Price.

If your station is on the “going-home” side of a busy intersection, you win on convenience. If you can shave two cents off your neighbor’s price, you win on cost. But location is fixed, and racing a competitor to the bottom on price is a strategy with diminishing returns and razor-thin margins.

Woodland BIO introduces a third value proposition: Impact.

By offering a locally-sourced, sustainable gasoline at price parity with fossil fuels, retailers give consumers a reason to go out of their way. A driver may pass three other stations to fill up at a “Woodland BIO Partner” site because they know their purchase supports Pennsylvania jobs and a cleaner environment, all without a “green premium” at the register.

The “Plug-and-Play” Advantage

The most significant barrier to new fuel technology is often the infrastructure. Woodland BIO gasoline is engineered to meet existing road-specifications. It is chemically interchangeable with conventional gasoline.

For the retailer, this means the fuel is “plug-and-play.” It can be stored in existing tanks. It flows through the same lines and enters the vehicle through the same nozzles. There is no “transition cost” and no risk of equipment degradation. It is gasoline, reimagined.

A Built-In Marketing Engine

Woodland BIO isn’t just planning to supply the fuel; they are planning to drive the foot traffic. The company is developing a comprehensive co-marketing strategy to support its retail partners.

“We want to move beyond the pump,” Pandolfi explains. “We want to partner with retailers to tell the story of where this fuel comes from.” This includes at-pump signage and digital collateral that educates the consumer on the “forest-to-fuel” process, turning a routine chore into a conscious act of community support.

The Road Ahead

Woodland BIO is currently about to start the third and final phase of their engineering study, the final step before construction. The Tioga County facility is designed to produce 42,000 gallons of gasoline per day (roughly 0.4% of the Pennsylvania market), providing a scalable model that can be replicated across the Commonwealth’s biomass-rich counties.

For the members of the Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association, the message is clear: you can drive traffic to your store while supporting the local economy and forest sustainability by carrying Woodland BIO gasoline at your pumps.
