The Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association (PFMA), the statewide trade association representing convenience stores, supermarkets, wholesaler/distributors and affiliated businesses, praised the Pennsylvania House of Representatives today for passing historic legislation allowing some retailers to sell limited quantities of wine.
House Bill 1690 modernizes the state liquor code to allow restaurant (“R”) and hotel licensees to purchase an expanded permit to sell up to four bottles of wine for off-premise consumption. The bill passed the House by a vote of 157-31.
“We are very pleased that House members voted in favor of modernizing Pennsylvania’s wine sales, which is a significant first step in providing the convenience shoppers have requested,” said Alex Baloga, PFMA director of external relations.
The bill was a concurrence vote with Senate amendments, so it now heads to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
“Our thanks to Speaker Mike Turzai for sponsoring this historic legislation,” said David McCorkle, PFMA president and CEO. “We hope the legislature will continue to look at ways to offer adult beverage sales with greater convenience for consumers.”
