The Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association (PFMA) recently concluded its Annual Fall Legislative Conference, held at the Hershey Country Club. This two-day event gathered food industry leaders, policymakers, and key stakeholders to discuss critical state and federal issues impacting Pennsylvania’s food and retail sector. The conference offered dynamic sessions, meaningful discussions, and extensive networking opportunities, making it a valuable experience for all attendees.
Board Meeting, Golf, & Keynote Dinner
The conference kicked off with a PFMA board meeting, where association members discussed key initiatives and set priorities for the coming year. Following the meeting, attendees enjoyed a round of golf, providing a relaxed environment for networking and camaraderie. Later that evening, the conference hosted a keynote dinner reception, highlighted by remarks from Rick Siger, Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Community and Economic Development. Siger spoke about Governor Shapiro’s vision for bolstering Pennsylvania’s economy, emphasizing support for food and retail businesses across the state.
Legislative Panels & The Election
The second day focused on legislative issues affecting the food sector, beginning with two panels covering federal and state matters. Experts from the Food Industry Association (FMI), NACS, and the Consumer Brands Association shared insights into national challenges facing food and beverage retailers. Panelists included Andy Harig of FMI, Jon Taets of NACS, and Sarah Gallo of the Consumer Brands Association, who explored pressing issues and regulatory developments at the federal level.
On the state side, bipartisan representatives from Pennsylvania’s House and Senate discussed upcoming legislative priorities. This panel featured Colleen DeFrank from the Senate Democratic Caucus, Mike Schwoyer from the House Democratic Caucus, Jake Smeltz from the House Republican Caucus, and Scott Sikorski from the Senate Republican Caucus. Their insights underscored the importance of advocacy in navigating the state’s legislative landscape.
Attendees convened at Tröegs Brewery for a networking event that featured an election-focused panel. Industry veterans Chris Nicholas of Eagle Consulting & TJ Rooney from the Rooney Novak Isenhour Group provided an analysis of Pennsylvania’s political climate and the impacts on the food industry.
Looking Ahead
With invaluable insights and connections made, this year’s PFMA Fall Legislative Conference was a resounding success. PFMA members and partners are now better equipped to address the evolving needs of Pennsylvania’s food and retail sector. Looking forward, PFMA has already set the date for the 2025 Annual Conference, scheduled for May 13-14 at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort, where the association will continue its work to support and champion Pennsylvania’s food merchants. ■
